Greetings, When I found the book for today's featured review, I didn't know what to expect. It was a devotional, after all, and one that included short stories, which is something I've written before myself. As I started reading the reviews, it became even more apparent that this one was worth the read.
So when I reached out to Ms. Britton and asked what she thought about it becoming one of the featured reviews for this year's blog tour, her yes was well worth it. She even asked if she could write an article. While that will come later on in this tour, I'm excited to share this review now.
See you in the pages,
MJE

My Review of this Book:
Have you ever picked up a devotional expecting a routine study, only to find yourself completely swept into the lives of the people who walked alongside Jesus? That is exactly what Barbara M. Britton accomplishes in her devotional, Across the Lake. As she reflects on a recent trip to the Sea of Galilee, she takes us deep into a world of her own making.
Britton seamlessly weaves imaginative biblical fiction with practical scripture study. By using short, compelling stories to open six passages from the Gospel of Mark, she lets us experience familiar biblical events through the eyes of those who lived them, while bringing her own spin on well-known stories in scripture.
What stood out to me most was her focus on the small, seemingly minor characters. These overlooked figures aren’t just background filler; they make a huge difference in showing the reader where the story is taking us in the devotional aspect. The characters carry fun, distinct personalities, and the vivid, believable details make the setting feel deeply personal and relatable.
The structure of the book is one of its strongest assets. Breaking it into distinct parts and dividing the readings into short, manageable sections for each day or week makes it fit easily into any quiet time routine. Each short story leads naturally into relatable reflections that consistently send the reader straight back to the Bible. I especially loved how Britton encourages us to look beyond Mark, drawing connections to other passages across both the Old and New Testaments.
Beyond the creative narratives, the devotional maintains a warm, down-to-earth tone that makes taking part in the reflective discussions a task that can easily be enjoyed rather than a required aspect. The study questions are practical and thought-provoking, which would make this book work remarkably well for a Sunday school class or a small group study.
As a fun addition, Britton includes her own author reflections, giving us a peek at the motivation behind why she wrote these stories. She wraps up the book with a clear, gentle section about what it means to know Jesus, landing the entire study on a wonderful note.
Five stars. A refreshing, scripture-focused devotional that helps bring the Gospel of Mark vividly to life.
