Finding Joy in Hard Times: A Devotional Thought

"Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people."

Labor Day is often celebrated with backyard barbecues, a day off from the daily routine, and a well-deserved rest from hard work. But behind the long weekend, many of us carry unseen burdens. We carry the weight of demanding jobs, personal struggles, and the quiet exhaustion that comes from navigating a broken world. When we are weary, our natural inclination is to pull inward, protect our energy, and focus solely on our own survival.

Yet, in a brief Biblical letter written from a Roman prison cell, the Apostle Paul offers a radically different path to finding Christian strength and peace.

Writing to his friend Philemon, Paul does not focus first on his own chains or the uncertainty of his future. Instead, he highlights something that brought him profound spiritual relief: the way Philemon loved the Christian community around him. Paul writes, "Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people."

Notice the flow of God's grace in this Scripture passage. Philemon poured himself out through faithful service to refresh others, and in doing so, the ripple effect reached all the way into a dark prison cell to refresh Paul. Paul found genuine joy and faith-filled strength not by dwelling on his own struggles, but by witnessing and receiving the love of a brother in Christ.

God built something amazing into how love works: when we pour out love to refresh others, our own hearts get filled right back up. Love is not something that runs out when we give it away. It is how God sends His grace and healing into the world. When we step outside of our own hardship to offer Christian encouragement to a coworker, lend a hand to a neighbor, or simply sit with a friend in their pain, we align ourselves with the very heart of God. In refreshing them, we find our own spirits lifted.

This Labor Day holiday, as you take a step back from your work, look around at the people God has placed in your sphere of influence. Your labor of love, no matter how small or unnoticed by the world, has the power to bring real joy and comfort to someone who is struggling, and in turn, anchor your own heart in God's peace.
